Nocturnal Migraines

Nocturnal migraines occur during sleep or upon waking, disrupting your rest and affecting your energy for the day ahead. Unlike hypnic headaches, which only occur during sleep, nocturnal migraines are classic migraines that appear at night due to various triggers. Some of these triggers may include: lack of sleep, stress, hormonal changes, or tension in the neck.

Nocturnal migraines generally occur at the end of the sleep cycle, between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. According to a study by Fox and Davis (1998), nearly half of migraine sufferers (1,698 out of 3,582) reported being awakened by a migraine attack or waking up with a migraine. Another study, conducted by Galego et al. (2002), found that this phenomenon affected 55% of patients with episodic migraines and 62.5% of those with chronic migraines.

Unlike hypnic headaches, which wake patients at the same time every night, nocturnal migraines occur more irregularly due to various triggers.
